Rivers are Life Premieres ‘Study Aboard’ Highlighting Mississippi River Clean Up Efforts & Education

Today, Rivers are Life premiered its latest film highlighting the work of Memphis-based River Hero Chad Pregracke and his organization, Living Lands & Waters. The documentary, titled “Study Aboard,” centers on Chad and his mission to protect the Mississippi River and beyond while empowering students to change the world.

Chad Pregracke grew up in Illinois with the Mississippi River as his backyard. As the son of two educators and river enthusiasts, Chad spent the majority of his childhood on, in and around the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. After years of working on the Mississippi River as a clam diver, commercial fisherman, and barge hand, he became appalled by the amount of garbage in the river and decided that if no one else was going to do something about it, he would. At the age of 23, Pregracke founded Living Lands & Waters, an organization dedicated to keeping rivers clean and safe.

“Study Aboard” tells the story of Living Lands & Waters’ “Alternative Spring Break” trips. Each year, Chad and his crew host college students on their workboats in Memphis, Tennessee. Students from all over the country spend a week in a floating classroom and living quarters on Lake McKeller, collecting trash before it flows into the Mississippi River. The trash is then brought to their barge, where it piles up and creates an impactful visual intended to move locals to realize the magnitude of the problem. Finally, the trash is recycled at a local recycling operation. These “Alternative Spring Breaks” show students firsthand the issues facing our rivers, while inspiring them and local residents to act now to protect them.

“If everybody had a cause, the world would be a better place,” Pregracke tells students. “You can make a difference, and hard work will pay off in the long run. All you need to do is change your world. That’s how the world changes.” 

To date, Living Lands & Waters has educated 11,386 college students from all over the country. Beyond “Alternative Spring Breaks,” the organization has worked on 25 rivers in 21 states and has hosted 1,326 community-based cleanups. Spending up to nine months a year living and traveling on the barge, the Living Lands & Waters crew hosts countless river cleanups, watershed conservation initiatives, workshops, tree plantings and other key conservation efforts. They collect 100,000 pounds of trash each year, with a total of 13,000,000 pounds of trash removed to date.

Alzheimer’s disease and dementia severity in the United States is escalating, posing a growing public health crisis. With an aging population, millions are affected by these devastating conditions. The ratio of Alzheimer’s patients in the 65+ demographic has reached 1 in 9 based on the study by the American CDC (Center of Disease Control and Prevention), highlighting the urgent need for research, care improvements, and increased awareness to address their profound social, economic, and emotional impact.

In response to World Alzheimer’s Month, Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital and Power-Stem Biomedical Group (Parent Company of Beauty-Stem Biomedical) jointly held a symposium. Dr. Jia-Fu Lee from Tzu Chi Hospital and Dr. Chai-Ching Lin, the President of Power-Stem Biomedical, discussed the testing data from a human trial program. 

“Our momentous achievement has arrived!” declared Dr. Chai-Ching Lin, President, Power-Stem Biomedical. “We proudly introduce the world’s first stem cell supplement, underwent by rigorous clinical trials and scientific validation. This marks an exciting breakthrough in regenerative supplements, a new chapter in our commitment to advancing science and improving lives.”

They assessed brain degeneration by measuring Alzheimer’s Disease Risk Index (ADRI) and CD34+ hematopoietic stem cell levels through scientific and quantitative blood tests after the usage of CD34 NU-Signals. It has been observed that when individuals start to notice memory and cognitive decline, the number of stem cells in their bodies also decreases significantly. Clinically, early detection and prevention are possible through a healthy diet, quality sleep, and regular exercise. And refer to the study, activating autologous stem cells through stem cell nutrients can significantly reduce value of ADRI risk index and increase stem cell count.

Dr. Lee from Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital’s Dementia Care Center stated that by analyzing brain waves with ADRI technology, and evaluating the risk of dementia through blood tests, it is possible to objectively detect the levels of depression and dementia risk. Released a month before Hispanic Heritage Month, Renzo Del Castillo’s “Still” is a collection of poems that reflects an all-too relatable tale for all immigrants.

After migrating to Florida from Peru as a child, Del Castillo built a life in a new country with a foundation forged in his native land, caught in the space between cultures. This led him to write “Still” [Indie Earth Publishing, $24.99], an exploration of the immigrant experience through reflections of memory and transition, an adaptation to new cultures and geographies through the ethnographic lens of Miami. His story, told in verse, is that of many immigrants.

Still” is a collection of poems that focuses on the immigrant experience: a family’s journey from Lima, Peru to Miami, Florida as political refugees and asylum seekers and the impact that had on the life of a boy as he grew into a man.

“We left Peru when I was five because my family had received death threats from a terrorist organization. We went from being comfortable to starting from zero. I knew I would have to adapt to make a life worth living,” says Del Castillo.

As we enter National Hispanic Heritage Month, Still provides a read that is as timely as it is pertinent. With poems in three languages, the book looks to bridge the divide between cultures, highlighting Hispanics’ shared experience in his poetry. When the reader finds something to relate to in these pages, a dialogue starts and shows people aren’t that different underneath it all.

That heritage of terror and exile that sometimes underlies these poems gives them a sense of history within the lyric confusions of a single life. There is an intimate tone, used to remind the reader that imagination triumphs over, or sometimes through, adversity. “Still” was released July 30, 2023, and is available wherever books are sold (ISBN: 979-8988037996).

Renzo Del Castillo holds a B.A. in English from University of Florida, specializing in Victorian Literature, and an M.A. in Mass Communications, specializing in Intercultural Communications.
